Ms Sim Lily holds a Bachelor of Applied Science with Honours (Applied Chemistry) from the National University of Singapore (NUS). Upon graduation, following her passion to teach since young, she enrolled into National Institute of Education, Singapore (NIE) and obtained her Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE). She started her teaching career at National Junior College and taught there for more than 10 years. She left NJC in 2014 to fully focus on tutoring JC Chemistry, something which she is passionate about. She has more than 13 years of experience teaching A Level Chemistry.
To date, 65% of her students scored A’s and 93% scored A’s and B’s. 85% of her students who had originally scored U’s managed to score B’s and above in their GCE A Level Chemistry examination. For two consecutive cohorts in 2014 and 2015, all of her students scored A’s and B’s in their H2 Chemistry paper.
Ms Sim has the ability to break down difficult concepts into simple, bite size learning content to help students in their understanding and application of the subject. She has tutored H2 Chemistry to students from Raffles Institution, Hwa Chong Institution, Victoria Junior College and National Junior College.
Why Join Us?
Identification of the topics that students need help is done through the review of students’ test and exam papers. We focus on doing a thorough diagnosis because we deliver lessons effectively by addressing the specific challenges faced by students.
Clear and Concise Lesson Delivery
We do this through breaking down complex concepts into simple steps. Subsequently, we link concepts to application by outlining the types of questions that examiners ask during A Level Chemistry exam to test the concepts and we provide the solution in response to those questions.
Summary Notes and Question Bank
Our summary notes capture key concepts that are commonly tested and comments on questions by Cambridge examiners are highlighted to help students ace their exams. We have a question bank that have questions sorted out by topics and concepts from all junior colleges that give students the edge in their exams.
Due to unfamiliarity with the topics, students are often unsure about which topics that they have covered when attempting practice questions before taking their tests. We have designed a tool called the “Progress Tracker” to help students get real time data to ensure that they attempt the questions related to the topics tested to maximize their performance.
Proven Track Record
Approximately 93% of our students attained A’s and B’s for their A level Chemistry which speaks volumes of our ability to produce excellent results.
About our Approach
Private Home Tuition
For private home tuition, the approach can be described in three phases: pre lesson, during lesson and post lesson.
Pre lesson – Before the first lesson is conducted, Ms Sim will find out from the student on the topics they need help on which will determine the focus of the first lesson. She will also review previous common test or exam to diagnose the issue faced by the student by looking at the three areas: a) Application and Bookwork, b) Weakest component across the three key components which comprise Physical Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry and Organic Chemistry and c) Weakest topic.
During lesson – During the lesson, topics are taught through the use of summary notes to convey the key concepts and highlight the frequently made mistakes by the students. Students are also asked questions to test on their understanding and application. Consultation is also provided to address the queries that the student has.
Post lesson – Questions are assigned to the student via email. Queries by students are answered and explained by Ms Sim via whatsapp to help them in between the lessons.
For group tuition, the approach can be described in three phases: pre lesson, during lesson and post lesson.
Pre lesson – Before the first lesson, Ms Sim finds out from students to determine topics they need help on and factor that in the lesson agenda. She reviews previous common test or exam to diagnose issues faced by student by looking at 3 areas: a) Application and Bookwork, b) Weakest component across the three key components (Physical Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry and Organic Chemistry) and c) Weakest topic. In line with our belief in serving the individual needs of each student, the weekly lesson agenda is sent to students in advance via whatsapp to prepare them for the lesson and also details the specific areas to follow up on by each student to address their individual needs.
During lesson – Each lesson has two components:
Teaching of content – Key concepts in the topics covered in the syllabus are taught to equip students with the fundamental understanding of the topics. An overview of the topic is provided through the use of summary notes. Students then apply what they learned by working on questions to reinforce key concepts that were taught.
Consultation and coaching – Personalised attention is provided to address the needs of each student. During the one to one time, Ms Sim will go to each student to provide consultation and help them clarify questions that they have problems with. Alternatively, students can also use the time for coaching on the particular topic that they need help on.
