Ms Sim Lily is an ex lecturer at National Junior College and taught at NJC for more than 10 years from 2004 to 2014. She has more than 13 years of teaching experience and specializes in A-level Chemistry tuition. She graduated from NUS with a Bachelor of Science (Hons), specializing in Applied Chemistry and also has a Post Graduate Diploma in Education.
For all the students whom she has taught to date, 65% of them scored an A and 93% scored As and Bs. 85% of her students who had originally scored Us managed to score Bs and above in their A levels. For two consecutive graduating cohorts in 2014 and 2015, 100% of her students scored As and Bs for their A-level Chemistry examination.
Ms Sim has the ability to break down difficult concepts into simple, bite size learning content to help students in their understanding and application of the subject. She uses a combination approach to learning, where she incorporates diagnosis and simulation, working with students to find out their challenges before customizing structured lesson plans for them. Under her guidance, students will also work on a series of A-level papers, as well as papers from other Junior Colleges, in a simulated exam environment, to enhance performance. The combination approach to learning is supported through the use of summary notes.
Maths and Physics
He gets his greatest satisfaction when he sees his students understand what they have been taught and are able to translate that understanding into better academic performance.
Mr Espen Lim Chee Siong has been tutoring students in A-level physics and mathematics for about 18 years.
Mr Lim, a mechanical engineering graduate with previous experience teaching in a junior college, gave personal home tuition for about 10 years before moving on to group tuition, capped to a class size of eight students.
His transition to small group tuition is driven by his desire of impacting the lives of more students. It allows the maximization of learning effectiveness through personalized attention in a group setting, something that cannot be achieved by large group tuition.
The father of two children, aged three months and 21 months, goes the extra mile by providing notes and customizing his lessons to accommodate different learning abilities.
He employs an exam orientated style in his teaching to help students maximize their improvement in the shortest possible time. Students find Mr Lim’s lessons interesting and have given feedback that he is able to break down complex concepts to facilitate understanding by the students.
Between 2013 and 2015, he tutored more than 100 students from various junior colleges. 96% of those students achieved As and Bs in their A-level examinations. He has also been featured in MyPaper, The Straits Times and The New Paper.
General Paper and IB English
Mr John Goh was trained and certified as a tutor in Hawaii Pacific University. He went on to tutor English writing and ESL (English as a second language), to students from Hawaii Pacific University and Oregon State University. From the year 2000 to the present, Mr Goh has had many students ranging from Secondary to Junior College levels. 95% of GP students tutored by him had scored Bs or better in their A level GP examination. 100% of GP students who had originally scored Cs and below were able to score at least a B or better in their A levels.
To do well in GP, students would require more than good writing skills. Mr Goh’s strengths lie in coaching broader insight and perspective, and in developing personal opinion and innovative thinking. Coupled with his extensive overseas experience, Mr Goh’s approach to GP aims to not just equip students with the mastery to do well in examinations, but to also hone a keener appreciation of real-world issues.
